Message from Our DirectorHey y’all! Thanks for taking time to stop by our website for the Academic Supports Program! As I write this, our project will be heading into our 30th year of empowering black students to not only succeed at UCLA, but to succeed beyond the university. This project was created during a time where there was a Black retention crisis on campus, and students started noticing that more and more students were dropping out than coming in. Let me paint the picture for you...imagine a class of 100 students, and only 20 of those students graduated in 5 years. Yes, it was really bad. The university wasn’t doing anything about this crisis, so it forced students to think about a solution. We are the solution. You are the solution. We are each other’s solution. And with that mentality in mind, the Academic Supports Program proposal was submitted in 1988.
It’s been 8 years since I was first introduced to the Academic Supports Program during my Freshman Summer Program, and 3 years since I graduated and there’s never been a moment where I felt this project wasn’t a necessary component of the Black community here at UCLA. Whether it’s academic, financial, or personal, we can help you navigate the resources on campus and in the L.A. community , and ensure that you are on the right track to graduation!
